Abstract

Sleep is a compilation of unconscious conditions. Everyone needs different amounts for rest and sleep, the quality of sleep depends on the level of development of the individual itself. This study aims to improve the effectiveness of massage on the quality of sleep in the elderly in the Implementation Unit of social services for elderly and toddlers in 2014. The research design used was a Pre Experiment with pre-test and post-test in one group (one group pretest posttest) with the number of samples is 24 people. The sampling technique uses simple random sampling technique. The instruments used were demographic data and sleep quality questionnaires. The results of the study showed a significant improvement in the sleep quality of the elderly, where the sleep quality of respondents before being given back massage, namely: good sleep quality was absent (0%) and poor sleep quality as many as 24 people (100%), while the sleep quality of the elderly was given given masase again, good sleep quality by 20 people (63.3%) and poor sleep quality by 4 people (16.7%). The statistical test results using the Willcoxon Match Pair Test obtained p = 0,000, can be used to compare massage back effectively in improving the quality of sleep for the elderly in the social technical Implementation Unit of the elderly and children under five inĀ  in 2016. With this knowledge, buying masses can improve the quality sleep, it is hoped for the special community of nursing home managers to apply massage therapy.
