Abstract

In Samalanga subdistrict, Bireuen District the number of live birth 679 in 2013 in the family with 4 – 8 children. The purpose of thisobservational studywith cross-sectional design was to find out the influence of socio–economic factor (income, occupation, education) and cultural factors on the number of children in Samalanga subdistrict, Bireuen District in 2014. The population of this study was the 3907 families with the wives ≥ 45 years old and children living in Samalanga subdistrict, Bireuen District and 210 of them were selected to be the samples for this study through two stage cluster sampling technique. The data for this study were obtained through questionnaire distribution and were analyzed through multiple logistic regression tests at α=5%. The result of this study showed that 159 respondentshad more than 2 children. The number of children was influenced by income and culture. The family with low income has probability to have more than 2 children 2.396 times bigger than the family with high income. The family with negative culture has probability to have more than 2 children 5.276 times bigger than the family with positive culture. Negative culture is the family who considers that having many children is better, their ambitions and wants as parents can be materialized. Education and occupation did not have any influence on the number of children. The Head of District and Women Empowerment Board and Family Planning of Bireuen District should more improve the Family Planning Program especially among the poor families that they can decrease the number of children in their family, and the community figures in Samalanga subdistrict can change the family views about the value of children
