Abstract

Hepatitis B is a liver disease which is caused by Hepatitis B virus (VHB), a member of Hepadnavirus family which can cause liver inflammation or chronic, and it can possibly cause cirrhosis of the liver. Prevalence of Hepatitis B in Indonesia is still high due to the transmission of hepatitis B from mothers giving birth to babies. The objective of the research was to find out some factors which influenced midwives in giving Hepatitis B immunization to newborn babies in the working area of Pijorkoling Puskesmas, Padangsidempuan. The type of the research was a survey with cross sectional design. The population was 102 childbirth mothers aided by midwives in the working area of Pijorkoling Puskesmas, Padangsidempuan, from January to March, 2014, and all of them were used as the samples. The data were analyzed by using univatriat, Chi square, and multiple logistic regression tests. The results showed that capability (p = 0.019, 95% CI 1.195 to 7.034) effect on immunization hepatitis B. the variables that most influence is the capability to value Exp B = 2.899 means a midwife who has a good capability to have the opportunity to provide hepatitis B immunization 2,899 times greater than the capability of midwives who are not good. The low coverage of immunization is due approximately 64.7% of mothers stated midwife did not explain to the mother that all newborn infants should be given hepatitis B immunization, 59.2% of mothers stated midwife did not get an explanation of the benefits of hepatitis B immunization in infants. It is recommended that the management of Pijorkoling Puskesmas, Padangsidempuan, increase the coverage of giving Hepatitis B immunization by motivating mothers to have their babies immunized. Besides that, health care providers should be trained and midwives should be given reward so that they are motivated to do their job well
